Enhance Your Oral Health with Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

Therapy that aims to support your goals!

WHAT IS OROFACIAL MYOFUNCTIONAL THERAPY?

Proper positioning of the face, mouth, and tongue muscles is essential for speaking, eating, and breathing. Myofunctional therapy aids individuals of all ages with orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs), such as tongue thrusting, to improve their efficiency in these activities.

For those with OMDs, myofunctional therapy incorporates various exercises aimed at correcting bite issues, enhancing breathing, and improving poor facial rest posture. This training targets the soft tissues of the orofacial complex— including the face, neck, and mouth—to achieve optimal tongue position and posture for oral relaxation. Treatment is customized based on age and specific symptoms, benefiting clients across all age groups.

Additionally, myofunctional therapy supports both pre- and post-surgical cases by preparing the orofacial muscles for surgery and aiding in recovery, ensuring better outcomes and expedited healing.

Symptoms of Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs)

  1. A person who never uses their nose and constantly breathes through their mouth.

  2. Lack of tongue movement.

  3. Current or History of messy or challenging eating.

  4. An underbite, overbite, or further dental issues.

  5. Even when not talking or using the tongue, the tongue protrudes past the teeth.

  6. Drooling, particularly after age 2.

  7. A challenge in swallowing with the mouth closed.

Causes of Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder (OMD)

  1. Blocked nasal passageways because of allergies or large tonsils. Some people may need to breathe through their mouths when their nasal passages are congested.

  2. Anything that makes it difficult to keep the lips together at rest or causes the tongue to be misplaced.
